Beautiful Japanese bamboo flute called a Shakuhachi.

There is a growing community of Shakuhachi players outside of Japan for a variety of reasons:

1. They are quickly becoming a "must have" item for "ninja cosplayers".
2. Learning the techniques to play Shakuhachi are a great form of meditation.
3. Playing the Shakuhachi is magickal! It can really reduce stress from life's "day to day stuff".
4. Shakuhachi are just beautiful to look at! They really enhance any Asian themed decor.
5. Shakuhachi are a great conversation starter when people find out you play Shakuhachi.

THIS FLUTE is a wide bore root end Jinashi Shakuhachi in the key of D minor pentatonic. It plays easier than most Shakuhachi in the first octave (otsu) because it's wider than most. However, it cuts out at the very top of the second octave (kan). This is a typical compromise for wide bore flutes; easy, responsive, full sounding first octave with a more difficult second octave. Narrow bore flutes are nearly opposite; difficult in both octaves but a wider range.
This Shakuhachi was made around 2015 and lacquered inside but only at key points for intonation and moisture protection.  There is a Hanko that reads "Yamada".
This flute has undergone a "smoking" process to refine the look, feel and sound of the flute - transforming the "Madake" bamboo into what is called "susudake" (smoked bamboo). These are quite rare and hard to find - even in Japan.
Although it is a 1.8 Shakuhachi in the key of D minor pentatonic (like the ones typically used in traditional Japanese court music ensembles), it is a slightly wider bore flute which lends itself to meditative playing and using the flute as an instrument of spiritual development.

People usually choose wide bore flutes for meditation and personal development. Narrow bore flutes are usually chosen by professional musicians wanting to perform on stage. This flute is recommended for the first group of people.

The followers of the Rinzai Zen master Watazumi Doso Roshi often play wide bore flutes but they are quite large in length and diameter, unadorned with either lacquer or inlay and very difficult for beginners or those with smaller hands.

This key of D shakuhachi (20 inches/51.5cm) is shorter than a typical 1.8 key of D (about 21.5 inches/54.5 centimeters) so is easier for beginning students with smaller hands.

Typically, the most played keys for Shakuhachi are D (1.8), then E (1.6) and finally C (2.0). D is usually for ensembles playing traditional Japanese court music, the other two for solo playing or modern ensemble playing.

To reiterate: This flute is exactly as it appears in the photos, it a has a beautiful "smoked bamboo" patina, is a wider bore than a typical key of D which translates to easier playing in the first octave (Otsu) but cuts out towards the top of the second (kan) and is recommended for meditation and personal development.
