WHAT THIS FLUTE IS:
This is a 1.8 wide bore non root end Jinashi Shakuhachi in the key of D minor pentatonic.  This flute plays quite easily in the first octave with a really big sound - I believe because of the wider than normal bore.  Most 1.8s are around 54cm in length, this one is 51.5cm in length.
It's about 3 years old and lacquered inside at key points for intonation and moisture protection.  There is a Hanko that reads "Yamada".
This is a great beginner to intermediate level 1.8, an instrument for meditation, or just as a really beautiful addition for display.
This is real bamboo and free from any damage.   If there are any scratches, you'd need a magnifying glass to find them.

If you'd like to learn the fundamentals of the Shakuhachi on your own for meditation or solo playing of simple songs, then this Shakuhachi is a great choice.  If your goal is to perform gagaku (court music) or honkyoku (a particular set of Buddhist songs), then a higher end Shakuhachi (usually "jiari" and root end) would be a better choice.

Basically, you don't need a Stradivarius to learn violin or a Les Paul to learn guitar but you'll need at least a mid range instrument for performing in concerts.  This Shakuhachi is a nicely tuned mid range flute but not perfect.  You can retune it to perfection if you'd like but it would take away alot of its spirit.  Jiari Shakuhachi are usually spot on with tuning but lose a lot of the "spirit of the bamboo" in return.

I hope this helps you in picking the right shakuhachi for what you want!
